Looking for a fun way to explore Norwegian culture with your family on your own schedule? February's Family Handcraft at Home is for you!  You'll get to learn the traditional folk art of knitting as a family, and you can do it when it works for your family's schedule!

Knitting is a traditional handcraft practiced by many cultures throughout history as a technique for producing textiles for the home or clothing. Several distinctive styles developed throughout Norway, and you will learn a bit about some of them during this experience. We invite you to try your hand at this historical handcraft with beloved folk-art instructor Maree Hampton. Maree will inspire you to be creative in unexpected ways through a warm video demonstration. You'll learn how to cast on, knit, purl, and cast off – everything you need to know to knit a scarf!  The best thing about this class is that you can watch the video and open your kit materials to explore knitting whenever it is most convenient to you and your family members! Your registration provides you with a kit that includes everything you need to do family handcraft at home!

Supplies: The $20-per-family price covers the cost of a special folk-art class kit designed for two participants to explore knitting. Kit includes all folk-art materials needed, some images as inspiration from the Vesterheim Collection, and a treat.

Special Instructions: When registering for the class, please make sure to use the address you'd like the kit shipped to, and the email address you'd like the Zoom meeting invitations sent to. You will receive links to the Zoom sessions by email sometime during the week prior to the class. If this class is a gift, please sign up with the recipient's mailing and email addresses or be prepared to forward all communications and/or kit supplies.

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.

Enrollment Deadline: January 17, 2022

Maree Hampton

Maree Hampton has been knitting for over 20 years, ever since her Norwegian cousin, Åshild, taught her in Norway. (Maree was working on a fruit farm in Hardanger one summer during college.) She has learned a lot from other knitters, knitting classes, various knitting books, magazines, and online tutorials. She is obsessed with Norwegian knitting—hats, mittens, sweaters, and accessories—and she enjoys wearing her Norwegian woolen items all winter long!
