Learn the Norwegian language while you explore some cultural activities of Norway! Professor Galstad from Luther College and students in the Nordic studies program will lead this after-school program. Included in each lesson will be basic Norwegian language instruction and typical activities focusing on Norwegian folk art and outdoor traditions. Past students of Norsk Skole are welcome to return. Some activities will be outdoors, so come dressed for the weather! An after-school snack will be provided.

Norsk Skole will begin each class at Vesterheim's Bruening Visitor Center in the Westby-Torgerson Education Center at the corner of Mechanic and Water Streets. A Folk Art School staff member will be there to greet students as they arrive. Vesterheim Folk Art School will offer a walking school bus for any Norsk Skole registrants coming from John Cline School. If your child attends John Cline and would like to "ride" the walking school bus please email Folk Art School staff directly. For participants coming from Carrie Lee School, parents can coordinate through the Carrie Lee office for students to meet and walk to Vesterheim together. Montessori or homeschooled students can be dropped off or walk on their own to Vesterheim.

Luther College Nordic Studies Program

Evelyn Galstad

Evelyn Galstad

Evelyn Galstad, or Eddy as she is known to many, is an instructor of Norwegian language with Vesterheim. She is a recent graduate of Luther College, where she studied Vocal Performance and Nordic Studies. Last spring, Eddy worked closely with Professor Maren Johnson in an internship focused on curriculum development for Vesterheim’s after-school program, Norsk Skole. Her interest in Norwegian language and culture started young, beginning with her family ties to Norway and then deepened as she started attending Skogfjorden, the Norwegian village at Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota. For the past four summers, Eddy has taught Norwegian at Skogfjorden and has loved her time there. She is so excited to continue teaching at Vesterheim and cannot wait for the adventures ahead!
