Do you like playing with fire? This course is for jewelers that have some skills but would like to take it to the next level. If you have felt like you are missing some of the vital information and techniques of silversmithing, this is for you. This class will give you a little more freedom to cultivate your designs and uses more advanced techniques to turn them into reality. This class will be structured to show you how to accomplish specific techniques and then allow you to practice your new techniques over three days. Once you have been instructed, it’s time to play with fire! We will cover advanced soldering techniques and build on what you already know. We will also focus on making bezels and prongs for gemstones and fabricating techniques for rings, earrings and pendants. Stone setting will also be covered in this class as well as forming sterling silver. All the tools will be provided to create your masterpiece. Students will be provided with an initial kit of materials at the start of class. There is a materials fee of $150, payable to the instructor. Additional sterling silver and gemstones will be available for purchase. The materials fees will be collected by the instructor at the conclusion of class.
Michael Seiler is a goldsmith and jewelry designer in Lanesboro, Minnesota, and has been working in the metal arts since 1995, mastering the techniques of fabrication, stone setting, wax carving, stone cutting, and stone inlay work. He has worked with a number of prominent local designers and has taught metal-working classes at Minnetonka Center for the Arts and North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Michael is a recipient of the 2012 McKnight Established Artist Grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council and a 2014 Established Artist Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. He co-owns and operates Crown Trout Jewelers in Lanesboro with fellow artist Liz Bucheit. Crown Trout Jewelers is currently celebrating its 21st year as the oldest artist-owned business on Lanesboro’s Main Street.
