The woven band played an important role in traditional Norwegian clothing. Bands were used to close or support clothing in ways that we now use buttons, zippers, snaps, or velcro. They also added beauty and interest to an item of clothing while identifying a person as coming from a particular area of Norway. Today, bands can be used as bookmarks, belts, lanyards, bag closures, and handles. In this class we will focus on a pick-up technique using a bandgrind, or band heddle. Students will be provided with all the equipment and materials needed to weave a sample band, including a bandgrind, shuttle, clamp, belt, and yarn. Band weaving is a good introduction to weaving and students of all skill levels are welcome.

The listed class time includes three Zoom sessions (Saturday 9:00-10:30AM CDT and 3:00-4:30PM, Sunday noon-1:00PM CDT) as well as time on your own, spent working on the band weaving technique.

Supplies: A complete kit of supplies (a $45 value) is included in the cost of enrollment. You'll also need a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.

Special Instructions: When registering for the class, please make sure to use the address you'd like the kit shipped to, and the email address you'd like the Zoom meeting invitation sent to. You will receive links to the Zoom sessions by email sometime during the week prior to the class.
