Join us this November for some family-fun and learn some Norwegian language along the way! Through hands-on activities, fun crafts, light-hearted games, and short videos, you and your family will learn and practice your new Norwegian skills. A kit will be delivered right to your home containing supplies for these language activities, a helpful reference sheet for all the new words and expressions you will be learning, a fun craft, and a yummy snack.
The adventure starts on November 1st and will focus on Kos, the Nordic concept of cozy living! Curl up together on your couch with your favorite blanket and cups of hot chocolate, sit by the fire, and gain a new understanding of Norwegian language and culture with us.
Vocabulary and phrases will focus on things in your home. The instructional videos teaching you these key terms will be short, to ensure you will have plenty of time to be active and cozy up together, as a family. These videos and activities are geared towards all ages, but probably most appropriate for families with school-age children. You and your family will be spending time together, enjoying the cozy atmosphere of autumn, and learning what it means to be truly koselig!
Our scavenger-hunt-type activity will get you up and moving, exploring, and discovering all that kos has to offer wherever you are and whenever you choose.
Don't hesitate to contact Josh Torkelson, Digital Folk Art Coordinator, with any questions you may have (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Supplies: The $20-per-family price covers the cost of a special adventure kit, which includes language activities, reference sheets, fun hands-on craft activity, snack, and directions for downloading and using the Goosechase app (a free app that is downloadable on any iOS or Android device).
Special Instructions: Your “family” could be any combination of adult or adults and child or children, all who are ready to have fun and learn some norsk are welcome! When registering for the class, please make sure to use the address you'd like the kit shipped to. Evelyn Galstad, or Eddy as she is known to many, is an instructor of Norwegian language with the Vesterheim. She is a recent graduate of Luther College, where she studied Vocal Performance and Nordic Studies. Last spring, Eddy worked closely with Professor Maren Johnson in an internship focused on curriculum development for the Vesterheim’s after-school program, Norsk Skole. Her interest in Norwegian language and culture started young, beginning with her family ties to Norway and then deepened as she started attending Skogfjorden, the Norwegian village at the Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota. For the past four summers, Eddy has taught Norwegian at Skogfjorden and has loved her time there. She is so excited to continue teaching this fall and cannot wait for the adventures ahead!
