- Level of Instruction
- This is a family program.
Join us this March for some family-fun and learn some Norwegian language and culture along the way! Through hands-on activities, fun crafts, light-hearted games, and short videos, you and your family will learn and practice your new Norwegian skills. A kit will be delivered right to your home containing supplies for these language activities, a helpful reference sheet for all the new words and expressions you will be learning, a fun craft, and a yummy treat.
The adventure starts on March 1 and the vocabulary and phrases will focus on Vikinger og mytologi, Vikings and mythology!
The instructional videos teaching you these key terms will be short to ensure you have plenty of time to be active and cozy up together as a family. These videos and activities are geared towards all ages, but most appropriate for families with school-age children. You and your family will be spending time together, enjoying the learning adventure, and sharing in springtime activities. Our scavenger-hunt-type activity will get you up and moving, exploring, and embracing the adventure wherever you are and whenever you choose.
This is a youth and family-oriented program. We offer adult language classes on our website here.
Don't hesitate to contact Josh Torkelson, Digital Folk Art Coordinator, with any questions you may have (email@example.com).
Supplies: The $20-per-family price covers the cost of a special adventure kit, which includes language activities, reference sheets, fun hands-on craft activity, snack, and directions for downloading and using the Goosechase app (a free app that is downloadable on any iOS or Android device).
Special Instructions: Your “family” could be any combination of an adult or adults and child or children, all who are ready to have fun and learn some norsk are welcome! When registering for the class, please make sure to use the address you'd like the kit shipped to. Kits are mailed out as registration and payment are completed. Scavenger hunt results will be shared on social media the week of April 5. Only one adult should register for the whole family.
Note: This program has been designed for families to experience on their own schedules. There is no live Zoom event and no scheduled class time – your family can participate anytime during the month when it works for your schedule!

About the Instructors
Dr. Maren Johnson
Dr. Maren Anderson Johnson is assistant professor of Nordic Studies and Director of the Richard L. and Judith A. Torgerson Center for Nordic Studies at Luther College. She teaches courses in Norwegian language and contemporary Nordic culture. Johnson received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Scandinavian language and literature from the University of Washington and B.A. in Norwegian language and literature from Pacific Lutheran University.
Evelyn Galstad, or Eddy as she is known to many, is an instructor of Norwegian language with Vesterheim. She is a recent graduate of Luther College, where she studied Vocal Performance and Nordic Studies. Last spring, Eddy worked closely with Professor Maren Johnson in an internship focused on curriculum development for Vesterheim’s after-school program, Norsk Skole. Her interest in Norwegian language and culture started young, beginning with her family ties to Norway and then deepened as she started attending Skogfjorden, the Norwegian village at Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota. For the past four summers, Eddy has taught Norwegian at Skogfjorden and has loved her time there. She is so excited to continue teaching at Vesterheim and cannot wait for the adventures ahead!
