Interested in carving a “Scandi Classic” to help spruce up your home for the holidays? Join carver Charles Banks as together we carve a tomte, the Swedish cousin to Norway's beloved nisse that is often associated with the winter solstice and Christmas! Students will experience the history, traditions, and steps involved in the creation of this folk-art classic. Emphasis will be placed on the introduction and skillful use of traditional cuts, stylized shapes, and painting techniques to bring your tomte to life.
Your registration fee includes a complete kit of materials shipped to your home with two character blanks, one practice stick, an OCC 1 7/8 inch straight knife, carving gloves, acrylic paint, brushes, and a special treat from Vesterheim (a $70 value). Kits will have everything you need to continue carving, long after class. Tools are required for this class and included in the class fee.
This class includes four Zoom sessions on Wednesdays, November 10 and 17 and December 1 and 8 (6:00-7:30pm CT) as well as time on your own spent working on the class project. Don't hesitate to contact Andrew Ellingsen, Folk Art Coordinator, with any questions you may have (email@example.com).
Supplies: Please wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Students will also need a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
